Investment Note

We are proud to announce our investment in Downforce Technologies, a global company providing a novel and highly-effective platform to measure the quantities and values of natural capital of land, remotely and to a high degree of accuracy.

Founded to address the critical need for the restoration of global soil health, Downforce Technologies is on a mission to make every hectare count to achieve global climate, biodiversity and food security goals. Downforce Technologies uses a combination of satellite imagery and existing datasets to measure a plot of land, any size, anywhere in the world, for carbon content (as well as water content and biodiversity).

Dragonfly has invested $1Mil AUD from our Impact Growth Fund alongside Tiverton Agricultural Impact Fund to a fully subscribed bridging round. The investment into Downforce Technologies is for growth, enabling their platform to scale globally, expanding from the UK, Australia and Africa into the US and Europe, expanding its sales, engineering, and data science teams to meet growing customer demands.

What Makes Downforce Technologies a Great Investment

The rapidly growing Downforce Technologies remote measurement tool is industry leading, with over 5 years of historical analysis, as well as future modelling and scenario planning, and 90% accuracy over soil sampling.

Nature-based solutions, especially soil health, are critical for achieving net zero carbon emissions. Our Impact Growth Fund focuses on investing in companies addressing our impact themes, including Natural Resource Usage and Enhancement and Decarbonisation.

By enabling farmers to benchmark their soil carbon content accurately, Downforce Technologies serve as a valuable regenerative agricultural data piece to manage seasonal risks and support the sustainable production of healthy foods. Addressing the restoration of global soil health creates material and rapidly expanding market opportunities such as sustainable land management, supply chain resilience, carbon markets and green finance.

Downforce Technologies can be used by a broad range of stakeholders, including individual farmers, farming communities, public bodies, food producers, asset managers, banks, insurers and food retailers. Its current client base includes prominent banks, landowners and retailers, as well as multinational corporations wanting to assess their supply chain impacts.

With a team of 24 experts, Downforce Technologies has decades of academic and business experience, coming out of 20 leading universities globally, with a track record of 8 startups launched and several successful exits. The company utilise their proprietary land classification methodology, and platform analytics to provide key services such as:

  • Soil sampling: Using existing gold standard data to develop functional classes and responses to environmental change.

  • On the ground monitoring: Using local sampling and surveys plus machine learning to enhance definition of functional classes and responses to environmental and land-use change.

  • Satellite and airborne observations: Using optical spectra, infrared, ultraviolet, radar, LiDAR and digital terrain data to produce high-resolution outputs at scale.

  • Global data sets: Using high quality internationally harmonised data for meteorology, climatology, land cover, biodiversity and water.

  • Existing natural capital models: Using published algorithms and results of models for microbial dynamics, soil-water interactions, soil biochemistry and vegetation health.
